Morning departure from Galata and through the national road with stops in between for coffee or food, arrival in Kavala at night. Kavala is a city of the prefecture in East Macedonia, Northern Greece with the same name. It is built on the hillslopes of the mountain Simvolo and is the third biggest city in Macedonia. Settle in the hotel ad overnight stay.
After breakfast we depart for Soufli. It is mainly known for the silk industry that developed in the area in the 19th century. The city is located on the eastern side of the Prophet Elia's hill, one of the last hills of Rodopi. We continue on to Kastanies which is a big settlement in the prefecture of Evros, found at the border between Greece and Turkey. That is the place where one out of two Customs stations is found which controls the entrance through the land borders. Visit to the outpost. Returning we stop at Orestiada. Nea Orestiada is the most recently built and the northest city in Greece. Founded in 1923 by Greek fugitives that originated from the suburb of Karagats after the Lausanne treaty. We decend to Alexandroupoli and stop for food. Alexandroupoli is a city of Thrace and part of the prefecture of Evros. It has 57.812 residents and is the biggest city of Thrace. It is an important port and trade center for the northeast part of Greece. Return to Kavala, overnight stay.
After breakfast, departure for Eikosifoinissas Monastery. Eikosifoinissas Monastery is situated at an altitude of 753 metres, on the north side of mount. Paggaio. It's located on the national road Serres-Kavala, on the border of the two prefectures Serres and Kavala. It falls under the jurystiction of the Holy Mitropolis of Drama. In the monastery are held, relics and original writings of great historic and ethnic importance. Following we visit the cave Alistratis. This cave is one of the largest in Europe. It's rich decoration consists not only of enormous stalactites and stalagmites in a variety of colours but also the rare elictites. Continue to Thessaloniki. Settle in to the hotel, overnight stay.
Thessaloniki is the second largest city in area and population in Greece. It contitutes the capital of the prefecture of Thessaloniki. We will pay homage to the Saint Dimitrios the city's protector, we will see the Rotonda, the Lefkos Purgos (White Tower) and then we have some free time. At noon we start our return. With stops in between for coffee and rest we reach Galata, with the nicest of memories.
